I love a good deal. I’ve written about it here, here and here. For our household, going back-to-school shopping is relatively easy. You see, our boys wear uniforms to school. So, most of the time I go to Target for red, white and blue polos. However, there are many items that I look for at secondhand stores. I have found barely used lunch boxes, kid’s pants and more often than not I find pairs of brand new socks in the packaging at the Goodwill! Here are 3 reasons why I shop secondhand:
1. Shopping secondhand inspires creativity. When we reuse items, it helps us learn to be creative. There are so many times when I am shopping at a secondhand store that I see something for what it could be and I get inspired to take on a crafty project. It also helps me get creative with my budget when I may not have enough to spend top dollar for the items I want to buy.
2. Shopping secondhand teaches our children to be frugal. We don’t always think about it, but our children are watching our every move. Sponging up every word and action. We can’t say one thing and do another. We must model frugality and practical spending so that our children grow up to be responsible adults. I try to talk to my boys about WHY we shop at secondhand stores, that it’s not for the $2 bag of cars and figurines they always
get ask for every time we go. 😉
3. Shopping secondhand benefits the local economy. Most secondhand stores are independent, locally owned small businesses or owned by a local non-profit that gives back to our community. If you have been following my blog for a while you KNOW how important it is to me to support our local economy. Let’s support our local entrepreneurs and non-profits by shopping at their stores.
