Aching back, a swollen mug shot and fingers, fatigue, and the unwavering anticipation of when and where… pretty much sums up the last few weeks of what felt like a very long pregnancy. The past 9 months had been spent scrambling, shuffling, preparing for the big arrival of my little one – not just at home, but at M Agency as well.
I am the first employee at M Agency to have this life-changing event to plan for, so as you can imagine, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The owners of M Agency pulled me aside one morning and laid it out for me; they had graciously granted me with something most mothers in America can only wish for: 12 weeks of maternity leave! As a new mother, this was fantastic and very welcomed news! Knowing that I was going to be out of the office during the first few months of 2016, the agency did a little shifting to ensure that my responsibilities would be handled during my absence. It was definitely an adjustment for all of us, but when it came time, I was relieved of work and able to really focus on my baby boy, Nolan Keanu.
Those 12 weeks were so needed, and I honestly don’t know how I would’ve managed without it. THANK YOU, Bobbie & Chris! You hear people talk about the lack of sleep with newborns, and you reassure yourself that it won’t be THAT bad… but it is. You pull through it, because you have to, but your body & brain silently screams for mercy and yearns for the sweet comfort of solid shut-eye.
The first few days weren’t easy as we adjusted, but those sleep-deprived moments passed and I would look upon my son’s little face and felt the weight of his tiny body cradled in my arms – he was completely worth it. All of it! I just don’t know how well I would’ve functioned as a professional if I was expected to come into work immediately, which is why I am so grateful for the maternity leave. The three months not only gave me the time to bond with my new baby, but it also allowed me to figure out how to come back into my work life.
Everything had to be reconsidered: child care, schedule, finances, etc… I knew I wanted to come back to work simply because my brain loves to feel productive and thrives on slaying daily challenges. Plus I loved being part of M Agency! But at the same time, I was struggling with the idea of being away from my little one for 11 hours, 5 days out of the week. It’s a tough reality, but it came down to it, I knew it would be best for my family. So for the last few weeks on my maternity leave, my partner and I had the chance to tie up loose ends, hashed out our schedules, and discussed what to anticipate in the days coming.
As of March 28th, I am officially a full-time working mother, but that doesn’t make me any less of a mother. I come back to the M Agency with a new purpose, a new heart, and a drive to do my best! Not only to provide for my son, but to hopefully inspire him to dream big, and to work hard to accomplish those dreams. And with the support of my family, and the awesome team at M Agency, the decision to being a working mom came easy.
My first day back had a bit of a rocky start (I forgot my work key at home and locked myself out of the office – sheesh!), but I look forward to a productive and positive week! Happy to be back and working with the amazing force that is M Agency!
